AI Search Optimization (AEO) for Shopify Stores
Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and other assistants what to buy. We structure your store so those assistants can read your products, understand them and recommend them.
Shoppers are asking AI what to buy
Over the 2025 holiday season, traffic to U.S. retail sites from generative AI tools rose 693% over the year before, according to Adobe. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts now put eligible products in front of shoppers in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, and Shopify says those AI surfaces favor structured data with clean attributes.
Assistants answer from what they can read. Most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so anything a store shows only after its scripts load can be invisible to them. Facts buried in a long product description are easy to miss or get wrong. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of putting your store's facts where assistants can find them, in a form they can trust.
What we build
-
Product data
The facts shoppers ask about (size, fit, materials, compatibility, who is on a recording) moved out of long descriptions and into metafields and metaobjects your team can edit.
-
Questions and answers
Product, category and brand questions stored as records, shown on the page and marked up so search engines and assistants can read them.
-
Brand and author data
Structured data that ties each page to your brand, your authors and your products, and an llms.txt file that gives AI tools a plain summary of your site.
-
Ready for AI shopping
Clean product data for Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts, key facts rendered on the page instead of by scripts, and shipping and return answers in Shopify's Knowledge Base, which AI agents use to answer shoppers.
How we work
- Audit. We read your store the way an assistant does: key pages without JavaScript, your structured data, your llms.txt and your Shopify Catalog data. Then we ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers the questions your shoppers ask, and note what they get right and wrong.
- Plan. You get a list of fixes ranked by impact, each with an estimate.
- Build. We work on a copy of your theme, put the facts into fields your team can edit, and test each change before it goes live.
- Measure. We track visits from AI assistants in your analytics and recheck the same questions every month.
No one controls what an assistant says, so no one can promise you a spot in its answers. What we can do is make your store's facts easy to find, read and trust.
AI search audits start at $2,500
An audit covers your home, collection and product pages, a content page or article, and the data behind them: structured data, llms.txt, Shopify Catalog and your store policies. You get a report with each fix ranked by impact and an estimate, so you see the whole cost before you commit.
- The fee counts toward your project. Book the fixes, a redesign or any other project within 60 days, and the $2,500 is credited toward it.
- Any theme. We work on stores we didn't build, on stock and custom themes.
- Included in our builds. Plus and Premium builds include this work from the start.
Work we've done
-
The Symphony Store
Read the Symphony Store case studyFor the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's official shop, we built a theme around linked profiles for every recording's conductors, composers, soloists and ensembles, so assistants can find recordings by the names people ask for. Product questions live in fields the store team fills without a developer.
-
Baby Trend
Read the Baby Trend case studyParents ask AI whether a car seat fits their stroller. On Baby Trend's new site, 94 product pages mark up 468 questions and answers, 57 how-to videos are described in structured data, and articles are signed by Baby Trend authors, including a certified child passenger safety technician.

Our own site
In September 2026, a prospect showed us the answer ChatGPT gave to "Can you help me find a good Shopify developer in Austin?" It listed Braun Design Co first. One answer on one day is not a guarantee, and we do the same work on our own site that we would do on yours.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization. It is the work of making a store's facts easy for AI assistants and AI search features to find, read and cite: structured product data, questions and answers, structured data that names your brand and authors, and pages that don't depend on scripts to show what matters.
How is AEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. SEO helps your pages rank in a list of links. AEO helps an assistant use your facts in an answer, which usually means more structure: specific fields instead of long descriptions, and questions answered in plain words.
Can you guarantee my store will show up in ChatGPT?
No. No one controls what an assistant says, and answers change from day to day. We make your store's facts easy to read and check, and we measure what changes.
What is llms.txt, and do we need one?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of a site that summarizes it for AI tools and links the pages that matter. It was proposed in 2024 and is not a formal standard, so not every assistant reads it. It is quick to add and keep current, so we include it.
Do we need Shopify Plus?
No. The work applies on any Shopify plan. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts have their own eligibility rules, such as selling in the U.S., and we check them during the audit.
How does accessibility relate to AI search?
Closely. The structure a screen reader relies on, such as real headings, labeled buttons and image descriptions, is the structure an assistant reads too. Read more on our ADA compliance page.
How long does an audit take, and what does it cost?
Most audits take one to two weeks from kickoff to report. Audits start at $2,500. Larger catalogs and stores with more custom templates take longer, and the quote says so before we start. The fee is credited toward any project booked within 60 days.
